HTML entity vyjadřují znaky, jejichž zobrazení by činilo prohlížeči potíže. Asi nejjednodšším příkladem jsou znaky „menší než” a „větší než”, tj. <>, které prohlížeč interpretuje jako součást html tagu, a proto pokud chceme tyto znaky vypsat, musíme použít HTML entity. Zapisují se pomocí ampersandu (&), názvu příslušné HTML entity a středníku (;). Například tedy pro ampersand napíšeme: &.

Podobně můžeme zapsat znak i pomocí ASCII kódu znaku. Za ampersandem bude následovat dvojitý křížek (#), ascii hodnota znaku a středník. Například pro ampersand je HTML entita: &.
